Canada is a democratic secular society it respects freedom of religion and religious people. The word "secularists" is important: we need to make a distinction between a secular society and one that espouses secularism. Indeed, in many public arenas, there is overt hostility to input to public or social policy debates that is seen as in any way connected with religious belief. They only tolerate religion in that context, when the discussion criticizes or even maligns religion or religious people. The Parti Québécois certainly doesn't love religion, and it's obvious it's not indifferent.įreedom of religion is a complex and multi-faceted fundamental freedom, which is threatened and becomes the focus of conflict when secularists object to religion or religious people playing any role or having any influence in the public square. Other belief systems include Buddhism, atheism, and agnosticism.It's sometimes said that love and hate are not opposites, they are the same emotion, but with negative or positive content, respectively indifference is the opposite of both. Religions include Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The law uses the terms religion and other belief systems. Sometimes this leads to the discrimination of people who believe in a god or gods, even though there are laws against this. Similarly, an employer may not refrain from inviting you to a job interview because you do not have the same religion as they do.Ītheism, or the absence of a belief in any god, is quite common in Sweden. For example, a doctor may not refuse to give you medical care because of your religion. The law says that no person may be discriminated against due to their religion or other belief system. Infringements of freedom of religion happen in Sweden as well. In some countries, people are persecuted, driven away, and murdered because of their faith or religion. Discrimination and freedom of religionįreedom of religion is limited in many countries. It is included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights, and in the Child Convention. Everyone is entitled to being accepted no matter what their choice of religion, including if that choice is to have no religion at all.įreedom of religion is a human right.The same applies to wearing religious symbols or clothes.
